The St. Francis Brooklyn women’s basketball team was hoping to return to Remsen Street with its first road win of the year.

Instead, the Terriers found themselves playing catch-up all night in Newark, N.J.

Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week Alyssa Fisher scored 16 points, but SFC was never able to overcome an early spurt by NJIT, suffering a 56-49 loss to the Highlanders Wednesday night in front of 355 fans at the Wellness and Events Center.

Fisher, who had a season-high 24 points in Sunday’s overtime loss to Rider here in Brooklyn Heights, made 6-of-19 shots to go with four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.

She and the rest of her teammates couldn’t connect from long range, however.
Fisher made the lone 3-pointer of the night for the Terriers (1-3), who went a combined 1-for-18 from beyond the arc.

The Highlanders ran out to a 15-2 lead in the opening quarter before SFC began to reel them in.

Bella Green scored 13 points and ripped down eight rebounds for the Terriers, who crawled within two points in the first half after Fisher’s pull-up jumper.

But NJIT (2-2), bolstered by Aria Myers’ 12-point, nine-rebound night, began the third quarter with another run to open an 11-point cushion, leaving SFC to accept its second road loss and third defeat in a row overall.

With Daniel Lynch Gymnasium hosting its final games this weekend, the Terriers will take on UMBC on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In other local college hoops action, Gianna Gotti poured in 30 points but the Brooklyn College Bulldogs were beaten by non-conference rival Kean College Wednesday at Harwood Arena in Union, N.J.

Gotti, a senior guard, went 11-of-26 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line. She also grabbed 12 boards, handed out six assists and picked up three steals for BC, which fell to 1-1 on the campaign.

Erica James added 25 points for the Bulldogs, who will meet Bates College Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Emmanuel College Classic in Boston.

The BC men were run over, 67-40, by visiting William Patterson Wednesday night in front of 103 fans at the West Quad Center.

Kayin Olajide had a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-4 with their third straight defeat.
BC will be back in action Saturday afternoon at Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
