BRAZIL — Golden lion tamarins: A group of golden lion tamarins was seen in a tree during an observation tour at a private partner property of the Golden Lion Tamarin Ecological Park, in the Atlantic Forest region of Silva Jardim, on Thursday. The park was part of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association’s effort to conserve this endangered species.

VENEZUELA — Dancing devils: People in devil costumes crawled on their knees toward a church as they paid a penance as part of celebrations of the Catholic holiday of Corpus Christi in La Guaira, on Thursday. Spanish conquerors and Catholic priests presented dancing devils ceremonies to Latin America’s African slave population 200 years ago, who adopted them incorporating drums.

ITALY — Drying river: People fished near a hydroelectric power plant at Isola Serafini, on the Po river in San Nazzaro, Wednesday. The drying up of the river jeopardizes drinking water in Italy’s densely populated and highly industrialized districts and threatens irrigation in the most intensively farmed part of the country.

CROATIA — Supermoon: A supermoon rose behind a sculpture of Tomislav of Croatia, the first Croatian king, in downtown Zagreb, on Tuesday. The moon reached its full stage on Tuesday, during a phenomenon known as a supermoon because of its proximity to Earth.
