Our world in photos: April 25
LISBON — Youthful celebration of revolution that began before they were born: Thousands of people sing the folk song Grandola, Vila Morena, in the first minutes of Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Carmo square in Lisbon, as the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. The song by Zeca Afonso was broadcast on national radio as a signal to the troops that the coup was starting and became an icon of the April 25, 1974, revolution that restored democracy in Portugal after 48 years of a fascist dictatorship.
Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro presided over the colorful parade of troops and armored vehicles, with many onlookers holding red carnation flowers, the symbol of the revolution.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hoping to influence justices in their own front yard: Activist Stephen Parlato of Boulder, Colo., right, joins other protesters outside the Supreme Court as the justices prepare to hear arguments over whether Donald Trump is immune from prosecution in a case charging him with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, April 25, 2024. One of the core questions that the Justice Department is asking is whether Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, which he lost, constitutes an official act of the President, who takes an oath “to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Although the court, as of Thursday afternoon, April 25, appears likely to reject Trump’s expansive claim of absolute immunity, it could delay the case for further proceedings, decreasing the chance that a trial would take place before the election.
ATLANTA — Despite the leap, the outfielder can’t hold onto the ball: A flyball from Miami Marlins’ Emmanuel Rivera gets past Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. for a double in the third inning of a baseball game Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Atlanta. The Braves won that game 4-3, raising its win record to 17-6 for this season, and are at the top of the National League standings, with the highest win record among the NL’s East, Central and West divisions as of Thursday.
The Marlins, which now have a 6-20 record, will have to win some games in order to raise its division standings from 5th (last) in the National League East.
ECUADOR — Dramatic aerial acrobatics in front of the net: Endrick of Brazil’s Palmeiras, center, scores his side’s first goal against goalkeeper Moises Ramirez of Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle during a Copa Libertadores Group F soccer match at Banco de Guayaquil stadium in Quito, Ecuador, Wednesday, April 24, 2024. The Palmeiras and Independiente del Valle rank first and second, respectively, in Group F.
Also in Group F are Liverpool and San Lorenzo, a team based in Buenos Aires’ Boedo neighborhood.
ST. PETERSBURG — Russian children prepping for future competitions: A girl competes during a hobby horsing competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Several dozen kids — 48 girls and one boy, from first-graders to teenagers — gathered in a gymnasium in northern St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, for a hobby horsing competition. A hobby horse is a more sophisticated version of the children’s stick horse toy and is handmade, consisting of a stuffed horse head made of fabric, yarn and cotton stuffing. The hobby horse sport originated in Finland, Russia’s neighbor in the Baltic Sea region, during the late 16th century. Popular mostly among young girls, hobby horses became more widely known through the documentary “Hobby Horse Revolution,” directed by Finnish Oscar nominee Selma Vilhunen.
Hobby horsing has been proposed for inclusion for the first time in the 2024 Olympics.
AUSTIN — Riled up and arrested — a campus protestor: A demonstrator is arrested at a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Texas, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Austin, Texas. Protests have also broken out at George Washington University in the nation’s capital, UCLA, California State Polytechnic University/Humboldt, and Harvard and Emerson College, both in the Boston area.
In light of the protests, 29 Senators joined bipartisan forces on Thursday to introduce legislation that would review and change the definition of antisemitism to refer specifically to virulent speech or actions toward Jews, even though Palestinians are also a Semitic people.
BUCHAREST — Hoisted on a backpack, a bird’s eye view: A cat sits on a woman’s shoulders in Cismigiu Park, in Bucharest, Romania, Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
According to Romanian folklore, the cat came to be from God’s glove when He threw it on Noah’s Ark to catch the mouse.
ILLINOIS — The face of a suspect in random assassinations: Robert E. Crimo III appears for a case management meeting before Judge Victoria A. Rossetti at the Lake County Courthouse Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Waukegan, IL. Crimo III is charged with killing seven people and wounding dozens more in a shooting at an Independence Day parade in the suburban Chicago town of Highland Park, Ill. Crimo III was indicted in 2022 on 117 charges, including 21 counts of first-degree murder stemming from the mass shooting. He faces a minimum of 45 years on each murder count and would receive a life sentence if convicted on more than one of those counts.
Crimo allegedly disguised himself in women’s clothing in order to conceal distinctive face and neck tattoos, such as those pictured here, and to blend into the crowd as he made his escape.
BERGAMO — ‘Read my tats — SCORE!!!’: Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca scores during the Coppa Italia soccer match between Atalanta and Fiorentina at Gewiss Stadium, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Bergamo, Italy. Atalanta advanced to the Italian Cup final with a 4-1 win (and a 4-2 aggregate) over 10-man Fiorentina on Wednesday. Atalanta will now compete against Juventus for the trophy.
