CALIFORNIA — Wildfire: Firefighters watched as a helicopter dropped water on a wildfire on Thursday, in Laguna Beach. A wildfire fanned by gusty Santa Ana winds erupted in hills on the Southern California coast early on Thursday but firefighters kept flames from damaging homes and after several hours officials were optimistic the blaze could be stopped.

HAITI — Protest: A factory worker with paste smeared on her face to help diminish the effects of tear gas eyed the camera during a protest to demand salary increases in Port-au-Prince, on Thursday. The workers employed at factories that produce textiles and other goods said they made 500 gourdes ($5) a day for nine hours of work and are seeking a minimum of 1,500 gourdes ($15) a day.

UNITED KINGDOM — Newly signed: Brentford’s newly signed Danish player Christian Eriksen smiled as he posed for photographs with a team shirt during his official presentation at the Community Stadium, in London, on Friday. Eriksen signed with Brentford until the end of the season, almost eight months after collapsing from cardiac arrest at the European Championship. It will be a remarkable playing comeback to the English Premier League for the Denmark playmaker, who has said he was essentially dead for five minutes after collapsing in the opening Euro 2020 game against Finland.

CHINA — Breaking records: Nils van der Poel, of Sweden, crossed the finish line to break his own world record during the men’s speedskating 10,000-meter race at the 2022 Winter Olympics, on Friday, in Beijing.

IRAN — Anniversary: Clerics burned representations of the U.S. flag during the annual rally commemorating the anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution in Azadi Square in Tehran, on Friday. Thousands of cars and motorbikes paraded in the celebration, although fewer pedestrians were out due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
