Protesters continued to gather, breaching Myanmar’s new military rulers’ ban of a public gathering of five or more, which was issued on Monday with the intention to crack down on peaceful public protests opposing their takeover.

SPAIN — Waiting: Catalan Socialist Party candidate in the upcoming Catalan elections, Salvador Illa, looked at his phone during a photo session at the party headquarters in Barcelona on Monday. A former health minister of Spain, Illa hopes to become a quiet political disruptor in the country’s Catalonia region when voters go to the polls next weekend.

UTAH — Testimony: Paris Hilton wiped her eyes after speaking at a committee hearing at the Utah State Capitol on Monday in Salt Lake City. Hilton spoke out about the abuse she says she suffered at a boarding school in Utah in the 1990s, and she testified in front of state lawmakers weighing new regulations for the industry.

BOLIVIA — Carnival: A contestant dressed as the Carnival character Chuta showed off his dance moves during the election of the three main beloved Carnival characters: Chuta, Pepino, and Chola, all of whom represent gaiety, in La Paz on Monday. The winning trio of Carnival must be adept at spreading happiness and never tire of dancing, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their performances will be broadcast online.
