VENEZUELA — Fire: A firefighter rested after helping put out a fire at the Ministry of Education, where a fire broke out in the early morning before the offices opened, in Caracas on Thursday. The cause has not yet been disclosed. No injuries were reported.

CANADA — Rideau Canal: People made their way along the Rideau Canal Skateway on its opening day in Ottawa, Ontario on Thursday, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

POLAND — Protests continue: People gathered for a protest against a new anti-abortion law in Warsaw on Thursday. A near-total ban on abortion has taken effect in Poland three months after a top court ruled that the abortion of congenitally damaged fetuses is unconstitutional. Led by a women’s rights group, people poured onto the streets of Warsaw and other cities for the second evening in a row on Thursday to protest the move.

GREECE — Students protests: A university student held a banner during a rally against education reforms in Athens on Thursday. Thousands of protesters in Greece have held demonstrations in the Greek capital and the second-largest city of Thessaloniki against proposed education reforms, defying a weeklong public ban on protests imposed as part of measures to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

CALIFORNIA — Cloris Leachman: Flowers were laid on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star of the late Oscar-winning actress Cloris Leachman on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Leachman died Wednesday of natural causes at age 94.

PORTUGAL — Construction: A worker finished a wall just built in the Military Hospital canteen, which is being transformed into a 50-bed infirmary, in Lisbon, on Wednesday. At the hospital, hundreds of troops have spent frantic weeks this month rushing to turn every available space into makeshift COVID-19 wards, as Portugal scrambles to cope with a sudden deluge of cases engulfing the public health system.
