KANSAS — Planetary merge: People, silhouetted against the sky at dusk, watched the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter Monday evening in Edgerton. The two planets were in their closest observable alignment since 1226. Appearing a tenth of a degree apart, the alignment, known as the “great conjunction,” has also been called the “Christmas Star.”

BRITAIN — Standstill: In Ashford, Kent, police patrolled along the M20 motorway where freight traffic was halted as the Port of Dover remained closed on Tuesday. Trucks waiting to get out of Britain were backed up for miles and people were left stranded at airports as dozens of countries around the world placed tough travel restrictions on the U.K. due to a new and seemingly more contagious strain of the coronavirus in England.

INDONESIA — Tourist arrest: On Wednesday, police officers escorted French national Rayan Jawad Hendri Bitar, center, as he was shown to the media during a news conference at the Regional Police headquarters in Denpasar, Bali. Indonesian police said Wednesday that they arrested the Frenchman for allegedly possessing illegal guns and drugs on the resort island.

PALESTINE — Birthplace of Christ: A Palestinian National security unit was deployed in Manger Square in the West Bank city of Bethlehem ahead of Christmas. The square is adjacent to the Church of the Nativity, which is traditionally believed by Christians to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

BOSNIA — Camp fire: A huge fire broke out at a migrant camp in northwestern Bosnia, which has been in the focus of rights groups because of poor conditions in the tent facility. Thick black smoke could be seen rising Wednesday from parts of the Lipa camp near the Croatian border which currently houses some 1,200 migrants. The cause of the fire was not immediately known as migrants were seen running away in panic. There were no reports of injuries.

SOUTH AFRICA — Packed flight: Passengers boarded an Air France flight bound for Paris at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport on Monday. More and more countries around the world are restricting travel from Britain and elsewhere, including South Africa, amid concerns about new strains of the coronavirus.

GEORGIA — Voting begins: Democratic nominee for Georgia U.S. Senate, Jon Ossoff, waved as he left a polling place after voting early in Atlanta on Tuesday. For the second time in three years, Jon Ossoff is campaigning in overtime. The question is whether the 33-year-old Democrat can deliver a win in a crucial Jan. 5 runoff against Republican Sen. David Perdue.
