Health Department to begin issuing nonbinary death certificates in 2020
New Yorkers who didn’t identify as male or female in life will no longer be labeled as such in death, the Health Department announced Tuesday.
Beginning in January, the roughly 54,000 death certificates the department issues each year will have a third gender option — “X” — in addition to male and female markers.
Trans men and women will still be identified as male or female on their death certificates, according to a spokesperson for the department.
