NOVELIST MARY SHELLEY was born on this day in 1797. Shelley was the daughter of feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, and the wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. She’s best remembered for her Gothic novel “Frankenstein,” which she wrote as part of a ghost story competition with Lord Byron and other writers when she was 18 or 19. Shelley died in London in 1851.

HUEY PIERCE LONG was born on this day in 1893 in Winnfield, Louisiana. The politician was nicknamed “Kingfish,” and became governor of Louisiana in 1928 and a U.S. senator in 1930. Long was a left-wing populist and sought to make large strides in infrastructure, education and healthcare. His “Share Our Wealth” proposal was a more radical departure from Roosevelt’s “New Deal” program, proposing a net asset tax on the wealthy to curb the poverty brought on by the Great Depression. Long was assassinated by a political opponent’s son-in-law in 1935.

THE FIRST FIRST BABY to be born at the White House was born on this day in 1893. Esther Cleveland was the daughter of President Grover Cleveland and his wife Frances. She died in New Hampshire in 1980.
