Two Accidents on Verrazzano Bridge Result in Serious Injuries, Massive Morning Delays

Two motor vehicle accidents occurred on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge this morning, resulting in several injuries and massive delays.

According to the FDNY, at 5:31 a.m. on Thurs. Dec. 20, a call came in reporting a multi-vehicle accident on the Brooklyn bound side on the upper level roadway of the bridge. Two people were injured in the crash. One victim was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, while the other went to Staten Island University Hospital. Their condition isn’t currently known.

A witness at the scene claims firefighters confirmed two people had been trapped in an overturned vehicle. Members of Engine 161, Engine 242, Ladder 81 and Rescue 5 worked to extricate the victims.

Then, at around 6:22 a.m. on the Brooklyn side of the bridge, on the lower level, another multi-vehicle accident occurred. One injured victim was taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

Various SI express buses were detoured or delayed because of the crash.

Following the accident, the MTA tweeted, “SIM1, SIM1C, SIM2, SIM3, SIM3C, SIM4, SIM4C, SIM4X, SIM5, SIM6, SIM7, SIM8, SIM9, SIM10, SIM15, SIM22, SIM25, SIM26, SIM30, SIM31, SIM32, SIM33 SIM34, SIM35, S53, SBS-S79 and S93 buses are delayed because of non-MTA crash on the lower level of the Verrazano Bridge.”

Along with the bridge, areas such as Hylan Boulevard also experienced massive traffic delays.
