GROUCHO MARX WAX BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1890. The comedian who, along with his brothers constituted the famous Marx Brothers, was born in New York. The Marx Brothers began as a singing group and then acted in such movies as Duck Soup and Animal Crackers. During the ’40s and ’50s, Groucho was the host of the television and radio show “You Bet Your Life.” Marx died in Los Angeles in 1977.

RUTH CHENEY STREETER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1895. Born in Massachusetts, Ruth Cheney Streeter was the first director of the US Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. She was active in unemployment relief, public health, welfare and old-age assistance in New Jersey during the 1930s. A student of aeronautics, she learned to fly while serving as an adjutant of a flight group in the Civil Air Patrol during the early years of WWII. She died in 1990 in New Jersey.
