WILLIAM HUBBS REHNQUIST WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1924. William Hubbs Rehnquist served as counsel in the Nixon White House and was nominated to the US Supreme Court as associate justice in 1971. As the most conservative member of the court, he was a staunch supporter of states’ rights and wrote a dissent to 1973’s Roe v Wade decision. President Reagan nominated him as chief justice upon the retirement of Warren Burger, and he assumed that position on Sept 26, 1986. He presided over the impeachment hearing of President Clinton and ruled on Bush v Gore (2000), which awarded the presidential election to George W. Bush following controversial ballot miscounting in Florida. Rehnquist died in 2005 in Virginia.
