“If nature isn’t kept healthy, humans won’t survive, simple as that.”

That’s the message Harrison Ford, star of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars film series, and board member of Conservation International, wrote in his bottle for the “Message in a Bottle” project started by artist Asher Jay.

“Message in a Bottle” began with 100 bottles gathered from litter and bottle-collection drives. Jay decorated them using scraps from neighbors’ recycling bins. Each bottle contained a message about environmental protection.

Jay took her project one step further and collaborated with the Dopper Foundation and artist Colin Hendee on World Oceans Day to create a replica of the Brooklyn Bridgewhich visitors can actually walk across — made out of 5,000 plastic water bottles.

“That is the number of bottles we consume in the United States every second,” Jay told National Geographic.

Jay wants to eventually add other overpasses like the London Bridge to the art installation when it moves to other cities.

“People get to see something that’s been cast away after a single use being recycled into art,” Jay said.

The installation stood in front of the National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey exhibit at Times Square and was also moved for a photoshoot in front of the Brooklyn Bridge itself.
