~THE GOWANUS ISN’T BROOKLYN’S ONLY CANAL: These days, everybody in the known universe can point the way to the toxic yet trendy 1.8-mile-long Gowanus Canal. But what about Shell Bank Canal? Have you even heard of it? It’s in Gerritsen Beach, a south-central waterfront Brooklyn neighborhood that you either know and love devotedly or have only read about in post-Superstorm Sandy news stories. Shell Bank Canal is tremendouslypicturesque. It is lined by boat docks jutting out of the back yards of private homes. If you don’t live in one of these homes, you can see the canal from several streets that dead-end along its shoreline. The canal is just one-third of a mile long. It runs the entire width — or nearly the entire width — of Gerritsen Beach. The canal doesn’t quite bisect the neighborhood, which is situated on a slim peninsula. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~WOOD-FIRED MEXICAN CUISINE HEADED TO GREENPOINT: The chef/owner of Clinton Hill’s popular wood grill centered restaurant, Speedy Romeo, is taking his kindling and desire for showmanship to open a new eatery in GreenpointJustin Bazdarich’s Oxomoco is set to open next year at 128 Greenpoint Ave. with the same wood-fire techniques from Speedy Romeo, but with Mexican cuisine instead. Bazdarich wants to make a show of two wood grills, putting the fire on display with tacos as the base of the menu. “You know you have your al pastor, we’re kind of taking that approach,” Bazdarich said. “Marinating a lot of meats, and hitting them on the wood-burning grill so they get that char and texture we’re looking for – as well as that smoke.” The location was once a plumbing store, but Oxomoco is expected to add style with giant skylights and sidewalk seating for the warmer weather. (via Grub Street)

~BROOKLYN BANGLADESHI COMMUNITY RATTLED AFTER TERROR ATTEMPT: When news broke on Monday that a man attempted to detonate a bomb inside the Times Square subway station, the question of where the man was from mattered to some. In particular, it concerned the city’s Bangladeshi community, which shares the alleged terrorist’s native land. News spread throughout Brooklyn’s Little Bangladesh community of Kensington that the man lived in the neighborhood, touting a bad name for the community that is already beset by poverty. “This is not good for the image of the community. For the image of the country,” Mohammed Islam said. “We worry. Because of one guy we are all worried. Maybe now the police arrest us for nothing. It is a problem.” The community has since been rattled with the fear of deportation after the attacks. Moinul Alam, president of the Bangladeshi American Center of North America, has already received calls from worried Bangladeshi Americans throughout the city, unsure of what the attempted terror attack could mean for their future in the city they now call home. (via The Guardian)

~COSMOS COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE TO LEAVE CLUB FOR MLS’ PORTLAND TIMBERS: Giovanni Savarese is leaving one hipster hub for another. The former Cosmos head coach is set to manage MLS’ Portland Timbers next season, according to ESPN’s Taylor Twellman. It may not be promotion/relegation, but it’s certainly a promotion for Savarese, who coachedPele’s former team for five seasons, winning three NASL championships and accumulating a 65-26-51 regular-season record. Savarese takes over a Portland Timbers side that finished first in the Western Conference last season, before losing to the Houston Dynamo in the Conference Semifinals of the playoffs. “Gio will always be a special person for me,” said Spanish legend and former Cosmos player Raul. “After almost one year of conversations, he convinced me to start a new journey with the Cosmos in 2015. Not only did Gio lead us to win the championship that year, but he also got us to be a family and gave us memories I will never forget. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Defense wins championships. Or in the case of the Brooklyn Nets, it can keep you relevant in the Eastern Conference postseason race. Our borough’s NBA franchise continued to inspire hope that it won’t be one of the league’s worst teams for a third straight season Tuesday night, using a tenacious defensive effort to eke out a 103-98 victory over the Washington Wizards in front of 14,515 fans at Barclays Center. “I think it’s just heart, really,” said Allen Crabbe, whose clutch 3-pointer off a feed fromSpencer Dinwiddie with 44 seconds remaining put Brooklyn in front for good after the Nets had squandered a double-digit second-half lead. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
