ON THIS DAY IN 1947, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Subway Cop Kills Western Badman in Duel in Station.”

The article focused on a gunbattle that erupted after a man held up a cab and ran into a Manhattan subway station.

“Police said the Idaho gunman fired four shots. All missed. John Keegan, an ex-Army officer, pulled the trigger twice. Lacasse died as both bullets struck him,” the Eagle reported.

RALPH BELLAMY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1904. The American actor appeared in more than 100 films and was best known for his stage and film portrayals of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was a founder of the Screen Actors Guild and the president of Actors’ Equity. Bellamy was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 1987. He died in 1991 in California.

IGOR FYODOROVICH STRAVINSKY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1882. The Russian composer and author is best known for the ballets “The Firebird,” “Petrushka” and “The Rite of Spring.” Stravinsky died in New York in 1971.

JOHN WESLEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1703. He and his brother Charles were the founders of Methodism. Wesley died in 1791 in England.
