A Bed-Stuy man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for month-long torture he inflicted on his former girlfriend while he held her captive inside his Bainbridge Street apartment in the summer of 2012, announced District Attorney Ken Thompson on Thursday, December 17.

According to trial testimony, 34-year-old Anthony Matthews tied up the 29-year-old woman – with whom he was in an on-again, off-again relationship – with cords and wires, beat her with a piece of wood, broke her teeth and burned her all over her body, all of which led to life-threatening injuries.

In an effort to end the ordeal, Matthews left the woman by the threshold of his mother’s apartment building, rang the bell and fled. He then told her to lie and say that she prostituted herself and was attacked by a man she met on Craigslist.

Throughout the month of captivity – which began when Matthews brought the woman from her father’s home in Peekskill, New York to his Brooklyn apartment on June 29, 2012 – her family did not know where she was.

“The defendant deserves this harsh punishment for his inhumane and barbaric torture of an innocent woman,” said Thompson. “May this sentence bring some solace to the victim for the unimaginable horror that she endured.”
