Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio on Wednesday announced the appointment of a diverse mix of 60 men and women to his transition committee that he said will assist him “in building a progressive, competent and diverse city government.”

The group includes numerous movers and shakers from across a wide spectrum –- from Harold Ickes, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff, to Karen Brooks Hopkins, President of Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), William Floyd, Head of External Affairs for Google and Peter Madonia, COO of the Rockefeller Foundation.

It also includes advocates like Bertha Lewis, President and Founder of The Black Institute, Herb Sturz, co-founder of Vera Institue of Justice, and Rev. A.R. Bernard, Founder, Senior Pastor and CEO of the Christian Cultural Center.

Illustrating de Blasio’s involvement in health and hospitals, the list includes representatives of five healthcare organizations, including Dr. Katherine LaGuardia, an assistant professor at Mount Sinai Medical Center; Dr. Conchita M. Mendoza, Chief of Geriatrics at University Hospital of Brooklyn and Long Island College Hospital; Dr. Rafael Lantigua, professor at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center; George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East; and Dr. Steven Safyer, President and CEO of Montefiore Medical Center.

“These leaders are volunteering their expertise in every issue and area of municipal affairs,” de Blasio said in a statement. “Together, they will join Transition NYC Co-Chairs Carl Weisbrod and Jennifer Jones Austin in helping me to assemble a team that’s devoted to building one great city where everyone shares in our prosperity.”

“My charge to the transition team is to identify women and men from every part of our city and walk of life that share a commitment to progressive and competent city government,” he said.

Transition NYC Co-Chair Jennifer Jones Austin said, “The transition committee members come from every slice of civic life — business and labor, science and the arts, clergy and the grassroots, advocacy and the academy and their contributions will prove invaluable.”

Transition committee members are not seeking to serve in the administration itself.
