Pretty bargains at Jet Beauty

Jet Beauty is probably one of the borough’s best kept beauty secrets – and it’s right here on Fifth Avenue.

Open for 19 years, it’s the spot where salon owners go, carrying a huge selection of hair dye and products, brushes and irons, makeup and nail polish.

“They are professional, hard-to-find items at the best prices,” said owner Alex Kokozakis, a Bay Ridge native, adding that the store makes deliveries to salons all over Brooklyn and there is also another retail location on Staten Island.

Jet may be best known for its fantastic nail polish selection at prices dollars cheaper than the drugstore. Bottles of Essie are just $5.99 compared to $8 at most stores. Opi bottles are $6.99. Besides the polish, you can also find all sorts of files, buffers and quick-dry drops.

Here you can also find the best brands for hair care to suit customers of all ages, including Matrix, Redken, Pureology, Sebastian, Biosilk, Clairol, Wella, KMS, Moroccan Oil and L’Oreal. There’s also a wall of fake eyelashes and a huge selection of Burt’s Bees products.

“If you can’t find it anywhere else, we will order it for you,” Kokozakis said. “When you are dealing with a small place like this, there is less red tape.”

Jet also carries a line of Ahava Dead Sea products that are “hard to find without going to the mall,” as well as Australia Gold Tanning that “no one else carries.”

There are also dozens of ceramic brushes, curlers, spray bottles, loofahs, curling wants, ceramic straightening irons and professional salon-grade dryers, as well as $20 ConAir dryers.

As for makeup, Jet carries brands such as The Balm, Nouba, Sorme and Palladio.

Kokozakis said that he has been in the beauty supply business since he was 10 years old.

“My father started importing scissors from Germany. They were cuticle clippers for manicurists, so it snowballed from there,” he recalled, adding that he was an employee at Jet Beauty for 12 years until he bought it six years ago.

“Being here for so many years, you’re the mayor of your own little block,” Kokozakis said. “All the store owners know each other. Sometimes it takes me a while to get home because I am talking to everyone.”

Kokozakis lives just four blocks away from the store and his kids go to local schools. He is a graduate of St. Patrick’s School himself. His five-year-old twins attend P.S. 185 and his four-year-old daughter is enrolled in Our Saviour Lutheran School.

The staff at Jet Beauty is also welcoming. They help customers with the selection of items that can be intimidating with a smile.
