The Brooklyn Spectator Magazine staff and dozens of other Brooklynites celebrated its official launch on Thursday, September 13, unveiling the five-month-old arts, culture and business publication to residents of South, Downtown and Northern Brooklyn.

The monthly magazine covers the areas of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene Greenpoint, Park Slope, and Red Hook, acting as an outlet and bringing attention to different parts of the borough.

“It’s almost like you feel validated,” said editor-in-chief, Heather Chin, adding that “it’s nice to get to know them [the community and the readers] better, and not just have them as sources.”

She continued by saying that “We’re not just here to write about what makes Brooklyn trendy- we’re here to cover Brooklyn from the inside out.

We are by Brooklyn, for Brooklyn,” she added, explaining that she believes it is helpful to have local writers who know the neighborhood well.

Victoria Schneps, founder of Schneps Communications, and Publisher/CEO of groups of weekly community newspapers in Queens and Brooklyn, said she is “thrilled” to expand, along with co-publisher Josh Schneps, to other parts of Brooklyn.

“We touch so many people’s lives with our newspapers, and now we are moving on to the Northern part [of Brooklyn].”

Tess Howsam,24, a Brooklyn based theatre artist, was among the attendees who spoke fondly of Chin. “She’s a driven individual who will bring a lot of attention [to Cobble Hill].”

A proclamation was given to the Schneps by Borough President Marty Markowitz.]

“Brooklyn is the artistic capital of New York City; it’s natural to have the magazine cover these areas,” exclaimed Jon Paul Lupo, interim chief of staff for the office of the Brooklyn borough president.

Adrian Cardona, Gabriela Falquez and Carlos Angelucci, Rapid Realty’s executives and franchise owners, joined the crowd in support of Josh Schneps.

“We are always meeting with Josh and getting him acquainted with the community,” said Falquez.

The great turnout gave the magazine a warm-welcome to the community.
