Good morning. Today is the 135th day of the year. On this day in 1607, the first permanent English settlement in what is now the U.S. took place in Jamestown. Captains John Smith and Christopher Newport were among the leaders of the royally chartered Virginia Company settlers who had traveled from Plymouth, England, in three small ships.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-composer David Byrne, Hall of Fame baseball player Tony Perez, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and actress Cate Blanchett (“The Navigator,” “I’m Not There,” “Elizabeth”).
