Registration for 2012 Brooklyn Half-Marathon Sets a Record

BROOKLYN — In a record for the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the Brooklyn Half-Marathon, set for May 19, sold out Monday in less than 10 hours.

Organizers on Tuesday could not recall any previous race selling out in less than 24 hours.

The half-marathon’s new route begins on Washington Avenue near the Brooklyn Museum, continues with a single loop through Prospect Park, passes Grand Army Plaza, continues down Flatbush Avenue and finishes at the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Previously, the route began within Prospect Park, then proceeded down Flatbush Avenue to the boardwalk. The changes allow for a field more than double the size of last year's race, according to the Road Runners. This year’s race filled in less than a third of the time it took in 2011, down from 31 hours.

"Registration for the Brooklyn Half-Marathon was a phenomenal, record-breaking success, selling out faster than any NYRR race ever has before," said New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg. "We can't wait to celebrate our excited runners as they take on a 13.1-mile tour through the heart and best of Brooklyn."

The event’s records are held by Pat Petersen, with a time of 1:03:56 in 1988; and Cindi Girard-Klein, who ran 1:13:15 in 1986. The race began in 1981.

The Brooklyn Half-Marathon, which is part NYRR’s “Run the City” program, will begin at 7 a.m.
