Kids Hold Contest To See Who Has Cutest Pet

Dyker Heights — Pictures of dogs, cats, birds and other creatures were laid out on a long table in the lunchroom at St. Bernadette School. In front of each picture was a coin box. As lunchtime wore on, small groups of children approached the table, looked at the pictures, and put money in the coin boxes.
The youngsters were voting with their money.
As part of the celebration of Catholic Schools Week, St. Bernadette School, 1313 83rd St., held a “Cutest Pet Contest” on Jan. 30 in which students brought in framed pictures of their pets to be judged by their peers.
Sister Joan DiRienzo, principal of St. Bernadette School, said the “Cutest Pet Contest” was one of the highlights of the school’s celebration of Catholic Schools Week.
“We thought it would be a fun and engaging activity for our students,” she said.
The contest was only one of the treats in store for students that day. Jan. 30 was also “Ice Cream Sundae Day.” Eighth-graders served ice cream sundaes to their fellow students, who enjoyed every last bite!
St. Bernadette School was a beehive of activity during Catholic Schools Week. The events included “Pajama Day,” a Reading Riot, Bingo, and the creation of a prayer chain on red, white and blue paper. The prayers written on the prayer chain will be sent to U.S. troops overseas.
