BROOKLYN NAVY YARD — THE DAMAGED MEXICAN NAVY Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc will be towed on Friday morning from Pier 36 in Manhattan to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs, according to the New York City Emergency Management Department, which will be tightly coordinating all the agencies involved.

These include the U.S. Coast Guard, the NYPD Harbor Unit, the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, the NYC Economic Development Corporation, NYC Ferry, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the government of Mexico, and private ferry and salvage partners.

Seventy crew members will disembark from Pier 36 and be transported to the shipyard via MTA buses. The East River between the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges will be closed from 6:30 to 8 a.m., and ferry service may be temporarily disrupted. Notify NYC will issue multilingual alerts.

A memorial to two young Mexican Navy cadets, América Sánchez, 20, and Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, 23, who died when the ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, has become a shrine on the DUMBO waterfront.
