SUNSET PARK — THE TRUMP administration on Wednesday paused construction on Empire Wind 1, an offshore wind project near Long Island. U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum claimed that the project had received insufficient analysis during the approval process.

The move prompted quick criticism from New York Democrats, reports Gothamist. Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Dan Goldman and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes vowed to fight the decision. The project, led by Norwegian firm Equinor, benefits Sunset Park’s and Red Hook’s economy, according to backers. Equinor said the project has created 1,500 jobs, and could one day provide power for as many as 500,000 homes; the company stated it is complying with the halt but is exploring legal options.

State Sen. Andrew Gounardes called it a “slap in the face to New Yorkers.”
