BROOKLYN BOROUGH — AT LEAST TWO BROOKLYN CONGRESS MEMBERS are sponsoring their district’s participation in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Established in 1982, the annual competition celebrates the artistic achievements of the nation’s high school students. All artwork must be the student’s original and individual work (no group collaborations), be two-dimensional and stay within 26”x26”x4” (including frame). The artwork can be paintings, drawings or of mixed-media, prints such as lithographs or silkscreen, computer generated art, or photography. Many Congressional offices invite a panel of local artists, such as artists-in-residence, art teachers and gallery owners, to act as judges. The winning artwork will be displayed for a year in the Cannon Tunnel — the most highly traveled access point between the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Capitol.

Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-11) and Dan Goldman (D-10) are each sponsoring the competition for students in their respective districts. Artwork must be submitted to either of Rep. Malliotakis’ district offices (Brooklyn or Staten Island) by Friday, April 25. Students and their parents in Brooklyn should call that district office at 718-306-1620 to coordinate a drop-off day and time. Students submitting artwork to Rep. Goldman’s office can visit his website for more information.
