PROSPECT PARK SOUTH — AN OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER saved the life of a man trying to rescue nine dogs from a burning apartment building across the street from Prospect Park on Friday morning, WABC reports. The firefighter was driving to work when he saw smoke coming from 152 Parkside Ave. Rushing inside, he prevented the resident from reentering his apartment to get the dogs. Firefighters responded and rescued five of the dogs. The off-duty firefighter, another firefighter and the resident were transported to Kings County Hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities said the fire may have been sparked by lithium-ion batteries, and the investigation remains ongoing, WABC said.
