BRAZIL — In recognition of those who came first: An Indigenous woman attends the 20th annual Free Land Indigenous Camp in Brasilia, Brazil, Monday, April 22, 2024. The 7-day event, which began Monday, aims to show the unity of Brazil’s Indigenous peoples in their fight for the demarcation of their lands and their rights. The camp also gives indigenous people an opportunity to protest and denounce what they assert are President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s unfulfilled promises to create reserves and expel illegal miners and land-grabbers from their territories. Known as Lula, this president had campaigned just last year on his pledge to resume granting lands to Indigenous peoples. However, he demarcated only two of the six lands he had promised to the Indigenous population.

Lula was seen as a contrast to his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of the agribusiness sector, who had pledged to not cede any lands back to the Indigenous people.

JAKARTA — More problems accepting election results: A protester shouts slogans as smoke billows from burning tires during a rally alleging widespread fraud in the Feb. 14 presidential election near the Constitutional Court in Jakarta, Indonesia, Monday, April 22, 2024. In what seems to echo the outcome of the U.S. 2020 elections, the country’s top court on Monday rejected appeals lodged by two losing presidential candidates who are demanding a revote. The candidates, who said they would respect the court’s decision, had alleged widespread irregularities and fraud at the February polls. However, the Constitutional Court ruled that there was no evidence of systematic fraud and presidential “meddling,” nor that state bodies, regional officials and social assistance had been mobilized to sway polls in the world’s third-largest democracy. The 72-year-old president-elect, Prabowo Subianto, is a former general and currently defense minister but has a history of human rights abuses, according to some sources. He takes office in October.

Prabowo will be succeeding a widely popular president, Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi.

The Senate returned from a scheduled recess on Tuesday, April 23, to vote on the funding bills, which, when passed, will provide $60.84 billion to address the conflict in Ukraine, including $23 billion to replenish U.S. weapons.

As of press time, the Senate voted 80-19 to overcome a filibuster that threatened to delay the bills’ passage further.

ARGENTINA — Opening the markets on a popular stimulant: Harvested yerba maté leaves are unloaded at the Andresito Cooperative in Andresito, in Argentina’s Misiones Province, Thursday, April 18, 2024. For decades, Argentina’s government has supported the industry with price controls and subsidies, but to fix Argentina’s financial crisis, President Javier Milei seeks to scrap regulations affecting a range of markets, including yerba maté.

Indigenous to South America, yerba maté may be in the form of leaves instead of beans, but it gives the person drinking it similar effects to that of coffee but without the jitters. Yerba maté has been said to boost alertness, energy and focus levels to those who drink it.

TEL AVIV — ‘Caught red-handed’ and definitely ‘taking it lying down’: Family and supporters of hostages held in the Gaza Strip hold up their hands, painted red to symbolize blood, to call for the captives’ release and to mark 200 days since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 cross-border attack, in Tel Aviv, Israel, Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Meanwhile, protests have spread to university campuses around the U.S., with pro-Israel groups calling for the release of hostages and pro-Palestinian groups calling for a ceasefire and an “end to genocide,” of which they are accusing the Israeli government.

The protests have led to the closing of campus grounds and university officials’ trying to de-escalate tensions among students and faculty.
