The Bay Ridge Lawyers Association, led by its president, Adam Kalish, hosted Christina Golkin at its monthly Continuing Legal Education (CLE) meeting on March 27, 2024. The session centered on providing culturally competent services to the LGBTQ+ community.
Christina Golkin, who began her career at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and now works in the Special Education Unit of the NYC Department of Education’s Office of General Counsel, brought a wealth of experience to the discussion. A respected figure in the Brooklyn legal community, Golkin founded the LGBTQ+ Committee of the Brooklyn Bar Association and has served as an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s College since 2010.
During her presentation, Golkin outlined key legal frameworks that support the LGBTQ+ community, citing the NYC Commission on Human Rights’ enforcement guidance and the protections under the New York State Human Rights Law. She also discussed significant cases that have shaped the current legal landscape, including Wilson v. Phoenix House and the Supreme Court’s decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which affirmed workplace rights for LGBTQ+ individuals under federal law.
