KASHMIR — Vocal and vehement grief for lost children: Women weep during a joint funeral of victims of a boat capsize on the outskirts of Srinagar, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Tuesday, April. 16, 2024. The boat capsized in the Jhelum River. Most of the passengers were children, and rescuers were searching for many others who were still missing. The force of water from heavy rains is being blamed for snapping the rope guiding the boat across the river.

Boating accidents are common in India, where many vessels are overcrowded and have inadequate safety equipment. A double-decker boat capsized near a beach in southern India just last year, causing 22 people (of the 30-plus aboard the vessel) to drown.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Deep contemplation, hand covering mouth — it must be something about the Middle East: President Joe Biden listens during a meeting with Iraq’s Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, April 15, 2024, in Washington. The talks had actually been scheduled before last Saturday’s drone attack by Iraq’s neighbor to the east — Iran. However, the focus changed to avoiding the escalation of this regional war amid fragile diplomatic relations between Washington and Baghdad.

Some of the missile launches from Iran overflew Iraqi airspace, and others were launched from within Iraq by groups backing Iran. An American military battery based in Iraq also shot down some of the missiles, reported AP.

NAIROBI — When doctors strike, the issue needs attention: Doctors and other medical staff take part in a protest in downtown Nairobi, Kenya, Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Hundreds of Kenyan doctors have protested in the streets, demanding better pay and working conditions in an ongoing nationwide strike for about a month. The doctors carried placards and chanted against the Kenyan government on Tuesday, saying it had failed to implement a raft of promises, including a collective bargaining agreement signed in 2017 after a 100-day strike during which people died from lack of care.

However, the current month-long strike, which the doctors believe is necessary “at the industrial level” to effect change,” has also emptied hospitals and has forced patients in some cases to delay treatment, resulting in worsening chronic illnesses and sometimes deaths.

COPENHAGEN — Indeterminate origin, indeterminate damage: People ride bicycles as smoke rises from the Old Stock Exchange in Copenhagen, Denmark, Tuesday, April 16, 2024. A fire raged through one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings on Tuesday, causing the collapse of the iconic spire of the 17th-century Old Stock Exchange as passersby rushed to help emergency services save priceless paintings and other valuables. The old stock exchange, otherwise known as Børsen, dates back to 1625 and is one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings, according to the Danish Tourism Offices’ website.

The building’s iconic spire, which legends say protected the building “against enemy attacks and fires,” had been designed in the shape of entwined dragon tails and stood 184 feet tall.

BOSTON — ‘Yikes, don’t let anything hit the green monster’: Boston Red Sox’s Jarren Duran makes the catch on the fly out by Cleveland Guardians’ Andrés Giménez, during the fourth inning of a baseball game, Monday, April 15, 2024, in Boston. However, that did not lead to a Boston win on that city’s Patriot Day, as the Cleveland Guardians won a shutout game, 6-0, against the town that was pivotal during the American Revolution.

The Boston Red Sox’s Patriots’ Day game in Fenway Park has been a tradition for 65 years — since 1959 — and is played in conjunction with the running of the Boston Marathon that passes through Kenmore Square, which is a block behind the Green Monster — the nickname for Fenway Park’s left-field wall.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — One bipartisan strategy — separate discussions of Ukraine and Israel:  Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., and the House Republican leadership head to a closed-door Republican strategy session as Johnson pushes towards separate votes on aid for Israel and Ukraine, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, April 16, 2024. The Louisiana Republican told reporters he would introduce four separate bills on the floor, separating aid for Israel and assistance for Ukraine, which has faced fierce pushback among some members of his conference. The third bill would include assistance for Taiwan, and the fourth bill addresses other Republican foreign policy demands.

If the bills go on the floor on Tuesday, Speaker Johnson will then honor a 72-hour rule that gives lawmakers time to read legislation before a vote to allow amendments and pass the House Rules Committee.
