In an ongoing effort to support individuals reentering society after involvement with the justice system, the Brooklyn legal community has announced a suit drive aimed at providing professional attire to those in need.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Brooklyn Combine, local bar associations, the District Attorney’s Office, the courts and legal aid organizations.

The suit drive, organized by Michael Farkas and Melina Alexis-Hayes of the District Attorney’s Office, has garnered support from the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Kings County Criminal Bar Association, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term, the Brooklyn Defender Services and the Legal Aid Society of Brooklyn. This collective action represents a continued commitment to assisting individuals seeking to make a positive transition back into the workforce.

Donations sought include new or gently worn men’s suits, dress shirts, ties and dress shoes, all of which should be provided on hangers. These items are critical for individuals attending job interviews or starting new employment, where appropriate attire can significantly impact first impressions and opportunities for success.

The community is invited to participate by dropping off donations at three convenient locations across Brooklyn. From April 24-26, items can be left at the Brooklyn Bar Association before 4 p.m. The following week, from May 1-3, donations will be accepted in the KCDA lobby at 350 Jay Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Finally, from May 8-10, contributions can be made at the Brooklyn Supreme Court at 320 Jay St. between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

This suit drive is part of a larger effort to address barriers faced by those exiting the justice system. Lack of professional attire can hinder an individual’s ability to secure employment, a critical step towards reintegration and independence. By providing suits and other professional garments, the Brooklyn legal community is removing one such barrier, offering a tangible means of support.

The suit drive reflects the understanding that reentry into society often requires community support. Through their contributions, donors are helping to afford justice-involved individuals a better chance at a new beginning.
