MUMBAI — Where else but India — bright colored pom poms on the handlebars: A woman dressed in traditional attire participates in a procession to mark Gudi Padwa or the Marathi New Year in Mumbai, India, Tuesday, April 9, 2024. The Marathi New Year, like many similar traditions around the world, is marked in the spring season.

Gudi is considered a symbol of victory over evil, and the holiday is joyful.

ARIZONA — The bond between coach and player gets ecstatic in a win: UConn head coach Dan Hurley celebrates with forward Alex Karaban (11) after their win against Purdue in the NCAA college Final Four championship basketball game, Monday, April 8, 2024, in Glendale, AZ. The Huskies downed Purdue 75-60 in the NCAA title game, making Connecticut the first Division I men’s college basketball team in 17 years to win back-to-back championships.

The Huskies (37-3) have now won six national championships, all in the past 25 years. While the Huskies have won more championships than any other men’s team since 1999, they come in second only to the school’s women’s team, who have won ten.

ATLANTA — Ardent fans adding up the score: In honor of the 50th anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record, 715 fans march onto the field, each holding a sign to commemorate an Aaron home run, before a baseball game between New York Mets and Atlanta Braves Monday, April 8, 2024, in Atlanta. Aaron passed Ruth’s record on April 8, 1974. An immensely dependable batter, Aaron had, by the end of his career, batted in 2,297.

However, he had an extra hurdle to battle on his way to achieving this record: dealing with racist death threats and hate mail because of his skin color.

DUBLIN — Now youth and green unite: The new Prime Minister of Ireland, Simon Harris, gestures as he is applauded by fellow lawmakers outside Leinster House, in Dublin, Ireland, Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Harris, who has held other government offices, most recently the minister for higher education and science, was selected after the previous Prime Minister Leo Varadkar resigned, becoming the youngest-ever Prime Minister of Ireland at age 37.

However, Harris is expected to face many hurdles — both domestic and international — particularly as Ireland is a fierce critic of the Israeli-Hamas war and blames Israel for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Ms. Thunberg, who had already gained attention in Sweden for her environmental activism, made worldwide headlines when she scolded world leaders during the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit.

During her speech, Thunberg exclaimed, “How dare you?” in reference to the leaders’ perceived indifference and inaction to the climate crisis.

DALLAS — Seldom seen fringes of the sun’s power: Solar prominences are seen during a total solar eclipse in Dallas, Texas, on Monday, April 8, 2024. ‘Enough heat in one linear mile of the sun’s fringe to cook the popcorn for all of civilization, for all of the movies they would ever, or will ever watch.’

The totality swath in the U.S. began near Eagle Pass, Texas, near the Mexico border and stretched through parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to the western portions of Pennsylvania, New York, and the New England states, according to a NASA map.
