NEPAL — Ancient culture reflected in stone, and in full-color costumes: Girls dressed as living goddess Kumari participate in a traditional Newari community music festival in Bhaktapur, Nepal, Monday, April 8, 2024. The festival was organized by the Shree Nasa Heima Baja Khala group with the aim to highlight the rich heritage of local Newari traditional dance and music. The Newars are a linguistic and cultural community of Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman ethnicities following Hinduism and Buddhism and have Nepal Bhasa as their common language.
The Newars consistently rank as Nepal’s most economically and socially advanced community.
