JERUSALEM — Ramadan in the Old City: Muslim worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound take part in the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan in the Old City of Jerusalem, Friday, April 5, 2024. The Mosque is part of the Temple Mount Plaza and is adjacent to the Western Wall Plaza, a sacred site for Jews, so much so that women are admitted only to certain sections of what is also called the Wailing Wall.

The classic portion now faces a large plaza in the Jewish Quarter that is near the southwestern corner of the Temple Mount. Interestingly, the rest of the wall is concealed behind structures in the Muslim Quarter.

JERUSALEM — Still a divided city, a tenuous peace: An Israeli Border Police officer stands guard from the Damascus Gate to the Old City of Jerusalem as Muslim worshippers leave the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound after the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan, Friday, April 5, 2024. The Old City is divided into four quarters, each with its own gate. The Muslim and Christian Quarters are the most populated. There are also the Jewish Quarter and the Armenian Quarter which, although it is the smallest in population, keeps itself staunchly independent of the wider Christian population within the Old City. The Muslim Quarter, by contrast, the largest and most populous of the four sections of the Old City, extends from the Lions’ Gate in the east, along the northern wall of the Temple Mount in the south, to the Damascus Gate—Western Wall route in the west.

The Christians’ Via Dolorosa path that Jesus took when carrying the Cross actually starts in the Muslim quarter.

NEW DELHI — The last days of Ramadan in India: Indian Muslims pray together on the last Friday of the holy fasting month of Ramadan at Jama Masjid in New Delhi, India, Friday, April 5, 2024. Islam’s holiest month is a period of intense prayer, self-discipline, dawn-to-dusk fasting and nightly feasts. Islam is considered the fastest-growing religion in India and is outpacing the demographic growth of the Hindu community. This has led to some ethnic and religious strife among the two groups. India’s Muslim population is about 172 million, comprising the third largest in the world — after those of Indonesia and Pakistan.

However, Indian Muslims are not monolithic; there are differences in ethnicity, caste and region.
