TAIWAN — Another earthquake hazard — buildings that haven’t fallen yet: Debris surrounds a tilted building (the Uranus Building) a day after a powerful earthquake struck in Hualien City, eastern Taiwan, Thursday, April 4, 2024. However, after the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, Taiwan strengthened its building codes doing so again in 2018 after a strong earthquake struck Hualien in 2018.

Taiwan sits on multiple active geologic faults, and the island nation has implemented strict building codes to make structures more quake-resistant, which is why many other buildings in the country withstood Wednesday’s disaster.

TAIWAN — Another earthquake hazard — buildings that haven’t fallen yet: A structural engineer takes samples from a leaning building a day after a powerful earthquake struck in Hualien City, eastern Taiwan, Thursday, April 4, 2024. This inspection is one of many that Taiwan conducts after earthquakes to continuously upgrade building codes. Wednesday’s quake was the first major one since the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake that prompted the government to implement much stricter codes.

Residents of the Uranus Building in Hualien were given just 15 minutes to run inside and retrieve valuables after Wednesday’s quake erupted around 8 a.m.
