In a heartwarming annual tradition now in its 11th year, Justice Joanne Quinones returned to her alma mater, P.S. 274 in Bushwick, for the Read Across America event this past Monday, March 4. Accompanied by members of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA), the event saw a delightful twist with attorneys and judges donning superhero capes and cowls, embodying the spirit of heroism as they read to captivated first graders.

This year’s theme departed from the traditional Dr. Seuss focus, instead embracing the universal appeal of superheroes, to the joy of the children who also wore similar capes and cowls, transforming the reading event into a gathering of aspiring heroes. Justice Quinones, who has made this event a cornerstone of her commitment to her community, highlighted the importance of mentorship and representation, sharing her own story of overcoming unlikely odds to reach professional heights, thanks to the guidance and opportunities provided by her mentors.

The event, deeply rooted in the belief that children from all backgrounds can achieve great success, included readings in Spanish by two BWBA members, emphasizing inclusivity and the importance of recognizing and celebrating diverse cultures and languages. The participating 50 first graders, divided into intimate groups, were not only treated to stories but also received goodie bags, cupcakes, and took the Reader’s Oath, a pledge to continue exploring the world through books.

Hon. Nancy Bannon and Hon. Genine Edwards, consistent supporters of the initiative, alongside Judge Quinones, have demonstrated unwavering commitment to this cause, with Bannon attending every year and Edwards only missing one or two events.

Reflecting on the inception of the Read Across America event at P.S. 274, it’s clear that Judge Quinones’s passion and advocacy have been pivotal in its enduring success. From securing funding to enlisting volunteers, her efforts have transformed a simple reading event into a highly anticipated annual celebration that bridges the gap between legal professionals and young students, showing them that judges and lawyers are approachable, real people who care about their futures.
