MEXICO — South of the border, running of the bulls ends up in the river: Residents drag a bull into the Papaloapan River to be returned to a cattle ranch at the end of a running of the bulls event as part of a festival honoring the Virgin of the Candelaria in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz state, Mexico, Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024. For nearly a quarter century, the residents have taunted, slapped, chased and run from bulls as part of the religious festival. It is reminiscent, though at a much smaller scale, of the running of the bulls in northern Spain and has continued year after year despite laws banning the mistreatment of animals.Photo: Felix Marquez/AP
