Looking to get on the ballot in NY? The NYC Bar Association hosts a seminar to help potential candidates

In an effort to demystify the complex process of running for office in New York, the New York City Bar Association has announced an upcoming event titled “How to Get on the Ballot in New York.” scheduled for Monday, Dec. 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

This in-person seminar aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the necessary steps and legal requirements to become a candidate in local elections.

The program is designed to break down what is often perceived as an intimidating process into manageable components. It will cover a range of topics crucial for prospective candidates, including determining eligibility for various offices, the intricacies of petitioning, and navigating the administrative processes at the Board of Elections.

Additionally, the event will delve into the legal challenges that can arise during petitioning, including court battles, and provide guidance on how to handle them effectively.

A significant focus will also be on compliance with Campaign Finance law, especially in light of the new State Public Campaign Finance Board program. Best practices for setting up a successful campaign will be discussed, providing invaluable insights for anyone considering a foray into politics.

The panel features a notable lineup of experts in election law. Among them are Martin Connor, a private election law practitioner and former NYS Senate Minority Leader; Douglas A. Kellner, chair of the NYS Board of Elections; Raphael Savino, deputy general counsel at the Board of Elections in the City of New York; and Sarah Steiner, a private election law practitioner.

The session will be moderated by Rachael A. Harding, also a private election law practitioner and the current chair of the Election Law Committee.

The event will be held at the New York City Bar Association located at 42 West 44th St., New York. This initiative is part of the Association’s ongoing efforts to foster an informed and engaged electorate, and is particularly timely given the increasing interest in local politics and governance.
