Det. Inspector Adeel Rana, Commanding Officer of Brooklyn’s 84th Precinct, has been promoted to Commanding Officer of NYPD’s Public Security Section, under the Intelligence Division.

The Public Security Section gathers and processes criminal and terrorist information from all sources, carries out investigations, and coordinates with the FBI’s New York-Joint Terrorist Task Force, among other activities.

Rana has served as Commanding Officer of the 84th Precinct, which includes Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO and Vinegar Hill, for the past three years. He has been a frequent sight at community meetings and neighborhood events, including 84th Precinct Community Council Meetings and National Night Out Against Crime.

“While this transition marks the end of my service here at the 84th Precinct, please know that my commitment to the well-being of our community remains unwavering,” Rana said in a letter to the Brooklyn community.

No replacement has been announced yet. Captain Steven Hyland continues to serve as Executive Officer of the 84th Precinct.

Groundbreaking appointment

Rana is the first Muslim and the first Pakistani American to receive an appointment to a top executive level in NYPD’s Intelligence Division.

It’s not the first time Rana has broken barriers. He made history in July 2020 by becoming the first Muslim and first Pakistani American commanding officer of a police precinct. Then in Dec. 2021, he became the first Pakistani American to achieve the rank of deputy inspector.

Rana, who was born in Faisalabad, Pakistan, is currently the highest-ranking Pakistani American in the NYPD altogether, according to vosa.tv.

He also serves as president of the NYPD’s Muslim Officer Society. After the floodwaters devastated Pakistan in 2022, the Society collected and shipped tons of emergency relief goods, including clothes, cleaning and medical supplies, to the beleaguered country. In Nov. 2022, Dr. Arif Alvi, President of Pakistan, personally presented Rana with an award for his work on the country’s behalf.

The appointment comes on the heels of a shakeup in the top ranks of NYPD under Police Commissioner Edward Caban, who was appointed by Mayor Eric Adams three months ago. A memo shared with the Daily News announced the reassignment of 53 high-ranking officers, including three assistant chiefs and 19 deputy chiefs.
