In a drive to bolster their administrative ranks, Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas announced Wednesday that the New York State court system is actively seeking applicants for Court Assistant positions across the state.

The NYS Court Assistant Examination, which facilitates these recruitments, will be conducted at various test centers statewide from Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, to Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023. Prospective candidates have until Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, to apply for the exam through the NYS Courts Careers website.

The Court Assistant role is integral to the operation of Supreme, County, District, City, and other courts throughout New York. These assistants perform crucial tasks tied to courtroom proceedings and may also work outside the courtroom providing procedural information, supervising court support staff, and managing document intake, among other duties.

Starting salaries for NYS Court Assistants in 2023 range from $54,768 to $59,403, depending on the location. However, the perks extend beyond competitive pay to include a regular work schedule, up to 27 paid vacation days after seven years of service, 13 paid holidays annually, excellent health insurance, retirement benefits, and promotional opportunities.

Aspiring Court Assistants should meet the following qualifications: Apply by Aug. 10, 2023, and take the NYS Court Assistant Exam (JG-16) between Oct. 11, 2023, and Nov. 1, 2023; possess a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience or four years of clerical experience (30 college credits may be substituted for each year of work experience); and be a U.S. citizen and New York State resident.

“The New York State court system offers rewarding career options, competitive salaries, and excellent benefits for those considering a career in public service,” Zayas said. “We are committed to achieving and maintaining a diverse, inclusive work environment and encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds who are interested in this exciting career opportunity to apply.”
