UKRAINE — Destroyed tank: Local civilians walked past a tank destroyed during heavy fighting in an area controlled by Russian-backed separatist forces in Mariupol, on Tuesday. Taking Mariupol would deprive Ukraine of a vital port and complete a land bridge between Russia and the Crimean Peninsula, which was seized from Ukraine from 2014.

INDIA — Demolition: An agitated Muslim resident asked media to leave during the demolition of Muslim-owned shops at the site of Saturday’s communal violence, in New Delhi’s northwest Jahangirpuri neighborhood, on Wednesday. Authorities riding bulldozers razed a number of Muslim-owned shops in New Delhi before India’s Supreme Court halted the demolitions on Wednesday, days after communal violence shook the capital and saw dozens arrested.

ISRAEL — Protest: Israeli police blocked right wing activists from marching towards the Old City, in Jerusalem, on Wednesday. Police prevented hundreds of ultra-nationalist Israelis from marching around predominantly Palestinian areas of Jerusalem’s Old City. The event planned for Wednesday was similar to one that served as one of the triggers of last year’s Israel-Gaza war.
