UKRAINE — Ambulance: An ambulance drove in downtown Kyiv, on Thursday as a 35-hour curfew in the Ukrainian capital came to an end. Russian forces destroyed a theater in Mariupol where hundreds of people were sheltering on Wednesday and rained fire on other cities, Ukrainian authorities said, even as the two sides projected optimism over efforts to negotiate an end to the fighting.

ISRAEL — Purim: Jewish ultra-Orthodox men and children, some wearing costumes, read the Book of Esther, which tells the story of the Jewish festival of Purim, at a synagogue in Bnei Brak, on Thursday. The Jewish holiday of Purim commemorated the Jews’ salvation from genocide in ancient Persia, as recounted in the Book of Esther.

JAPAN — Earthquake: A partially derailed express train sat following an earthquake in Shiroishi, Miyagi prefecture, on Thursday. A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan on Wednesday night, smashing furniture, knocking out power, and killing some people. A small tsunami reached the shore, but the low-risk advisory was lifted by Thursday morning.
