JAPAN — Outbreak: People walked along a pedestrian crossing on Wednesday, in Tokyo. With rising infections, a majority of the country — including Tokyo and other metropolitan areas like Osaka and Kyoto — were placed under new restrictions from Thursday, with shortened hours for bars and restaurants and curbs on large public events.

INDONESIA — Lunar New Year preparation: A Chinese god statue was cleaned in preparation for the celebrations of the Lunar New Year at the Kwan Im Thang Temple on the outskirts of Jakarta, on Wednesday. Chinese people around the world will be celebrating the beginning of the Year of Tiger on Feb. 1.
