UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, the docking has been delayed until Sunday, December 19.

UPDATE II: Sunday’s “Open Ship Day” has been cancelled due to a covid case onboard.

Norway’s largest and most beautiful square-rig tall ship, the historic 107-year-old Statsraad Lehmkuhl, docks at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday. The boat was originally scheduled to arrive Saturday afternoon, but was delayed due to inclement weather. A ceremonial arrival will feature the crew singing sea shanties from the deck.

The 107-year-old vessel, which has been restored and converted to a state-of-the-art floating research lab, is circumnavigating the globe to visit more than 30 ports until April 2023. It is highly praised and recognized as a vital part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Docked in Brooklyn until January 4, the environmental research vessel will feature an “Open Ship Day” for the public on Monday, Dec. 27.

A spokesman for the ship noted that all slots allotted for public visits were filled online “in just 48 hours’ when it was announced. “I am afraid COVID issues placed a limit on our public visit slots,” said the spokesperson. “The vessel’s mission and unusual historic status make it immensely popular.”
