KASHMIR — Blockade: Indian paramilitary soldiers set up barbwire to block a street near the house of separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani in Srinagar, on Thursday. Syed Ali Geelani, a top separatist leader and one of the severest critics of Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, died late on Wednesday. He was 92. Authorities announced a communication blockade and the restriction of public movement, a common tactic employed by Indian officials in anticipation of anti-India protests.

NORTH CAROLINA — School shooting: A woman screamed as she arrived at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, 30 minutes after the call of shots fired at the school, on Wednesday. One student was killed in a shooting at the North Carolina high school on Wednesday and authorities were looking for the suspect, officials said.
