The Schooner Apollonia, a sailboat that transports cargo sustainably on the Hudson River with wind power, returns to Red Hook, Brooklyn on July 30th.
Only this time, in addition to an expanded lineup of sail freight items for individual pre-order, it arrives with a cargo of several tons of red oak logs for growing mushrooms!
More on the unique mushroom growing partnership – which includes a variety of organizations, including Red Hook Farms and Red Hook’s RETI Center – available here.
Individuals can pre-order a mushroom log growing kit here for sail freight delivery to Brooklyn.  A demo with Steve Gabriel from the Cornell Small Farms Program on how to grow shiitake mushrooms using the kit will take place at the RETI Center’s Cool School Barge in the early evening on July 30th. The Apollonia docks at the barge courtesy of Gowanus Bay Terminal (GBX).
Orders for the grow kits and other Hudson Valley sail freight items including cider, honey, hot sauce, maple syrup, yarn, condiments, and must be placed by the end of the day on July 20th before the ship loads cargo upstate for its voyage.  This July run is the second of five voyages envisioned for 2021.
