PERU — Inauguration Day: President-elect Pedro Castillo arrived at the Foreign Ministry before going to Congress for his swearing-in, on his Inauguration Day in Lima, on Wednesday. The rural teacher popularized the phrase “No more poor in a rich country,” and stunned millions of Peruvians and observers by advancing to the runoff.

ITALY — Landslide: A view of a landslide in the municipality of Laglio, on Lake Como, on Wednesday. Towns around Italy’s Lake Como were hit by mudslides and floods on Tuesday, in yet another example of an extreme weather phenomenon that an agricultural lobby said has intensified in recent years. Italian firefighters carried out more than 60 rescues after storms wreaked havoc around the picturesque lake ringed by mountains in northern Italy. No deaths or injuries were reported.

TEXAS — Vigil: Arlington Police Chief Al Jones, left, and Sharetta Sublet, center, the mother of two teens who died on Friday, prayed during a vigil on Tuesday, at Artisan at Rush Creek in Arlington. Sublet’s sons were fatally shot after a dispute at a nearby barbershop escalated and spilled over to an apartment complex. A third teen wounded in the gunfight is now suspected of the killings, police said.
