TAKING FLIGHT: Jeannette Ridlon Piccard was born on this day in 1895. The first woman to qualify as a free-balloon pilot, she set a record in 1934 when she ascended more than 57,000 feet into the stratosphere with her husband, Jean Felix Piccard. She died in 1981.

FATHER TIME: Phil Niekro became a New York Yankee on this day in 1984. The 44-year-old knuckleball pitcher had spent the previous 20 seasons with the Braves in Milwaukee and Atlanta, winning 268 games. He won another 32 games during his two years in the Bronx, including his 300th on the last day of the 1985 season. “Father Time,” as he was known, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. On Dec. 26, he became the seventh member of the Hall to die in 2020. The others were Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford and Joe Morgan.
