A NEW WORLD: The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock 400 years ago today. According to Gov. William Bradford’s “History of Plymouth Plantation,” “On Munday,” [Dec. 21, 1620, New Style] the Pilgrims, aboard the Mayflower, reached Plymouth, Ma., “sounded ye harbor, and founde it fit for shipping; and marched into ye land, & founde diverse cornfields, and ye best they could find, and ye season & their presente necessitie made them glad to accept of it.”

CHRISTMAS STARS: The first moon voyage was launched on this day in 1968. Apollo 8, manned by Col. Frank Borman, Capt. James A. Lovell, Jr., and Maj. William A. Anders, orbited the moon on Dec. 24 and returned to Earth Dec. 27. The three were the first men to see the side of the moon that faces away from Earth.
