A VALIANT STRUGGLE: Frederick Douglass died on this day in 1895. Born to a slave in 1817, he became an abolitionist and “station-master and conductor” of the Underground Railroad. He campaigned for presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and, following the outbreak of the Civil War, helped raise two regiments of black soldiers, the Massachusetts 54th and 55th. After the war, he fought for the enactment of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution.

THE CAMERA EYE: Ansel Adams was born on this day in 1902. A photographer and environmentalist, he was known for his photos of the American West and for helping to expand the National Park system. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980. He died in 1984.

SOMEWHERE OUT THERE: John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on this day in 1962. Aboard the Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7, he made three orbits before splashing down safely in the Atlantic Ocean. His flight time was four hours and 55 minutes. The event was dramatized in the feature films “The Right Stuff” (1983) and “Hidden Figures” (2016).
