FATHER OF THE TRAMPOLINE George Nissen was born on this day in 1914. An NCAA three-time champion gymnast, Nissen worked with his coach, Larry Griswold, to build the first-ever trampoline. Nissen had been inspired by trapeze artists’ elastic safety nets. He and Griswold in 1941 founded the Griswold-Nissen Trampoline & Tumbling Company, which manufactured and marketed trampolines. Nissen lived to see trampoline gymnastics become an Olympic event in 2000.
